Easy camping recipes

Who doesn’t love the taste of outdoor food cooked over a campfire.  However , packing everything and the kitchen sink isn’t realistic when hauling your back pack up mountains, around trails and for days!

Check out these easy recipes that you can make to satisfy your taste buds without a lot of gear or ingredients.

Campfire scrambled eggs




Sounds super simple right!  When you master this recipe, you just may be cooking these out in your backyard too! Depending on your supplies, and how many people are eating - the general ratio is for each egg, add 1 tablespoon each of the butter and water.

Add the ingredients to a saucepan, and stir. Put the pot over the fire and keep stirring. Once the butter starts to melt, start a pattern of 30 second on the fire, and 10 seconds off, using a a slow heat method. Once the butter is all melted, mix again, and leave on the fire a bit longer, just until your eggs seem almost done.  Remove from the fire, and stir once more.  The heat from the pot will finish cooking the eggs.

Hotfired Chili Dog

8 Hotdogs, chopped into 1” pieces

1 small onion, chopped

1 can Chili

4 tbsp BBQ sauce

Hot dog buns

Tin Foil

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl (except for the buns). Gut out each bun and place each bun on its own piece of tin foil (enough to full wrap the bun). Fill each bun with the mixture, and wrap with the tin foil. Grill over a flame for about 20 minutes. 

Bannock Bread

An absolute favorite and and easy treat to carb up on those chilly days.

3 cups flour

2 tbsp baking power

Dash of salt

3 tbsp fat - butter, lard or oil

Up to ⅔ cup Water

Add all the ingredients, except the water, in a bowl. Mix with your fingers till the mixture feels crumbly like breadcrumbs. Slowly add ⅓ cup water and keep mixing with your fingers. The dough should be soft and malleable.  Keep adding water till you get the consistency. Keep mixing dough with your fingers until it seems sticky and bouncy.

To cook, add butter or oil to skillet over a fire.  Grab some dough to make a ball, and then flatten roughly with your hands.  Cook in skillet on each side until it’s crispy. Eat just like that or add butter, jam or another fave topping.  Another way to cook is to work the dough ball onto a marshmallow stick and cook over an open fire.

In the build-up to any major activity, sports scientists recommend giving your body the right nutrients beforehand so your body can reach its full potential. Although most people do not have direct access to a sports scientist for a curated diet, the next best thing you can do for yourself is follow the same general principles that elite athletes use in their fueling process.  Fuel adequately

It can be very easy to get caught up counting calories and nutrients, and then become discouraged when you get off track. Instead, focus on a basic number of total calories per hour. Generally, a target consumption of 100-200 calories per hour of exercise is great. Here is an estimate of consumables to reach that goal:

0.5-1.0 L of sports drink

0.5 - 1 energy bar

1-2 energy gel packets


Remember that refueling is key

The most important time to for fueling is immediately (30-60 minutes) after exercise. Your body will need that food to recover from the exercise it was put through, and to build up the extra strength it is working towards. Your post- exercise fuel should include the following three components:

Carbohydrates - 200-400 calories - sports drink, energy bar, etc Protein - 15 grams - PB&J sandwich, yogurt cup, chocolate milk etc Fluids - 1-1.5 L - water with electrolytes or sports drink


Think smaller, more frequent intakes
